If you use Amazon.co.uk or a Eurozone Amazon to pre-order my new ebook Family Tree by 31 December, you will save money, because VAT on ebooks will increase from 3% to a more typical figure of 20% on 1 January 2015.
Pre-order purchase links for Family Tree:
Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.com, iTunes, Kobo, Barnes & Noble and Smashwords.
For links to other on-line shops, please click on my Books page.
Family Tree, which was originally published in Helix (2008), is a story that's particularly close to my heart. In part it is a what-if about the Apollo programme, but mostly it's about the importance of teachers. If you are a teacher, or if you were inspired by those who taught you, this story is for you.

Fiction is Taxing (PSA)
4 December 2014
(Applies to EU customers only.)
Due to a forthcoming EU-wide change in VAT tax law, Amazon will be increasing ebook prices from 1 January 2015. From that date, the list price for ebooks on Amazon.co.uk (and the EU Amazons) will include VAT at the rate applicable to the purchaser's country, e.g. 20% in the UK, rather than the across-the-board 3% applied currently. I expect other platforms such as iTunes will do the same.
As nearly all my ebooks are minimum-priced already, and will remain so after Amazon applies the VAT increase, I don't have the option of reducing my prices. The sole exception is my collection Moondust Memories, which is already (IMO) priced very competitively indeed.
In summary:
- Price rises for ebooks on 1 January for EU customers (including UK).
- If you'd like to buy any of my ebooks, whether for yourself or as a present for a friend or family member, now/soon would definitely be a good time, especially if you live in the UK or another EU country.

The Ultimate Show in Brazil - The Final Score!

The Ultimate Show in Brazil - The Final!
9 July 2014
Unfortunately, I'll be away during the climax of the World Cup. The good news (for Oxfam) is that Germany have reached the final, so I'll be able to donate some money courtesy of my winnings (either £45 or £75, depending on the outcome) from the TTA Press Sweepstake.
There's still time to augment that total by purchasing The Ultimate Show from your usual ebook store. It is in a good cause: 80% of the royalties earned during the World Cup go to Oxfam.
I'll post a final update on the charity donation total when I return (15 or 16 July).

Dark They Were, Again and Again
4 July 2014
I'm delighted to announce that my 2010 Nature Futures short story, Dark They Were, and Strange Inside, will be reprinted in the Futures 2 ebook, coming from Tor in September. It's wonderful to have one's work chosen for a best-of anthology. This will be this story's fourth reprinting.
(I have also received an unrelated notifcation about another acceptance, but I'll post about that when the contractual side of things has been completed.)
And while I'm here, I'd like to wish all my readers in the USA a very happy Fourth of July!

The Ultimate Show in Brazil - Revised Tactics

After a rather slow start* to my bid to raise some money for charity, I'm increasing the percentage of royalties donated to Oxfam from all sales of The Ultimate Show during the World Cup to 80%, from 50%. (The other 20% goes to my long-suffering cover artist, who deserves some recompense for his sterling efforts on my behalf.)
Please consider buying The Ultimate Show from your usual ebook store**. It is in a good cause.

The Ultimate Show in Brazil
12 June 2014
The World Cup starts today. Joy for many, suffering for some. Or should that be the other way round?
Many years ago, prompted by several writer-friends of mine who assured me that no one would publish a speculative sports story, I wrote a World Cup fantasy tale titled Extra Time. Hub published it in 2009 and Trevor Denyer reprinted it in Hellfire Crossroads Volume 1 only last year. I've also self-reprinted Extra Time in my ebook mini-collection The Ultimate Show.
From today, for the duration of the World Cup (ends 13 July), I'll be donating 50% of any royalties I receive from sales of The Ultimate Show to Oxfam, a British charity easing suffering throughout the world. What's more, I'll donate 100% of any winnings I make from the TTA Press World Cup sweepstake. I've drawn Germany.
The Ultimate Show is available in Kindle format from all branches of Amazon, also in epub format from Kobo, Barnes & Noble and Smashwords. If you'd like to support me, please go to my Books page and follow the link to the appropriate on-line store.
Needless to say, there will be reminders and progress updates throughout the course of the tournament.
Thanks!

Another Review of Moondust Memories
6 June 2014
Moondust Memories has collected another 5* review on Amazon. Here is what Paul Laville has to say:
"In summary, 'Moondust Memories' is a rewarding read in the best possible way. A wonderful collection of thought-provoking and challenging stories that you will enjoy whether you're a fan of sci-fi or not. ‘Touching Distance’ is probably my most favourite story of the collection but I won’t spoil that here, just go read it and you’ll see why. ‘Star in a Glass’, ‘String-Driven Thing’ and the utterly gorgeous ‘Stars in Her Eyes’, not to mention ‘Slices of Life’, are all worth the ticket price alone. Each one of those stories is worth five stars individually, and each makes 'Moondust memories' as a whole much more worthy of its collective five stars than most of the factory pap churned out year after year by many of the populist authors at the top of the bestseller list." (Full review here.)
The Kindle edition of Moondust Memories is only £1.99 to buy from Amazon.co.uk and $3.35 from Amazon.com. Paperback editions are also available from these outlets.

Practicing Indies
3 June 2014
In a post I made just after Christmas 2013, I mentioned a short article I wrote for the British Science Fiction Association's Focus magazine (no. 61), in which I described my experiences to date of indie publishing. Now the whole issue is available online. It is full of interesting and enlightening articles on all aspects indie-publishing and the small-presses. I strongly recommend the whole issue to anyone starting out on this path. Even experienced practioners should read it, as there are always new tricks for old dogs to learn.

Old Home for New Dreams
2 June 2014
I'm happy to announce that my short story In Every Dream Home has just been published in Neo-opsis 24.
If you recognise where I've lifted the title from you'll probably get a clue as to this story's theme. If not, it's another of my disquieting ruminations on what new technology might do to human relationships.
Neo-opsis is a long-established Canadian science fiction and fantasy magazine, edited by Karl and Stephanie Ann Johanson. Another of my sf stories, Survival Strategies, appeared in issue 6. Needless to say, I'm delighted to see my work appear their again.

If you recognise where I've lifted the title from you'll probably get a clue as to this story's theme. If not, it's another of my disquieting ruminations on what new technology might do to human relationships.

Reviewing My Memories
26 May 2014
This is what Dylan S Hearn has to say about my SF collection, Moondust Memories:
"The tell-tale sign of great speculative fiction is that you are still thinking about it days after you finish reading. This has been the case for me with Moondust Memories. Highly recommended."

Website News
3 May 2014
I've replaced this website's Journal page with a blog. I rarely update my LiveJournal with anything other than promotional news, so it seems redundant to provide a feed to it here. Hopefully I'll find something more stimulating to write about in my blog. It will, however, likely be occasional. At least for now, I'll keep the news and promotional announcements on this page.

Walking to Post Two Scripts
4 April 2014
PS Publishing have announced in their weekly newsletter that they'll be publishing my pair of linked short stories A Walk in the Woods and A Walk in the Rain in issue 34/35 of the Postscripts anthology series, which should be out later this year. I already knew about these acceptances (from June 2012), but when you see the line-up for that issue, you'll know why I'm so pleased. The wait is always worth it.

My short story Touching Distance is now available to purchase in epub format for $0.99 from Smashwords and Barnes & Noble's on-line store. 28 March 2014
I've dropped the price of the Kindle edition of Moondust Memories to $2.99 (+taxes) on Amazon.com and £1.86 on Amazon.co.uk, with equivalent reductions at other branches of Amazon.
For those of you waiting for the long-promised print edition, I'm still working on it. There are problems with getting the cover formatted correctly. There'll be more news as and when my tame artist and I make progress.

Unfortunately my email account has been hacked. If you're in my address book, you've probably received an email, apparently from me, stating that I'm in the Ukraine, mugged and penniless... Please delete it and/or report it to your account provider. I've taken the appropriate security measures.
Needless to say, I have the greatest sympathy for the plight of Ukrainians and anyone who is stuck there at the moment. Let's hope for an outbreak of peace as soon as possible.
